I'm not sure about photographing fruit bats, they are asleep during the day (and their roosts smell pretty bad) and tend to take off around dusk. There is a colony in the Sydney Botanical Gardens (or was, there are attempts to dislodge them to stop damage to the trees) that you can get pretty close to, and some others around the harbour.
