I recently purchased the 85mm 1.8G and I havent had a situation where VR is missed. Ive shot outdoor with good and bad light. So far ive been very happy with its sharpness and handling. I havent used it enough to miss VR.

Have you done indoor shots with it? And when you say bad lighting outdoors - was it nighttime? I find that almost anything prior to sunset, even cloudy, rainy, is usually better light than indoors, at least in my dark house, unless they're sitting right underneath the recessed light.

And if I'm outdoors, I could easy use my 18-105 or 70-300 to cover that range. I suppose the advantage of the 85mm prime would be more bokeh and less distortion. I'm not so sure this will complement what I already have (which also includes the 35 1.8 and a Sigma 50 1.4).
