Sorry. Your first post seemed to say a q-tip was used.

I believe my old Pentax K100D has a sensor that rattles around when the camera was powered off. You could hear something move. However, being a DLSR, you had to flip up the mirror under power, so the sensor was then locked. I would always hear the sensor hum when I cleaned it. It sounded the same as the anti-shake mechanism on long exposures.

Same with my Oly E510. Power up to go into sensor clean mode, but I don't recall any noise.
