I would suggest that if you can't take the item back to the retailer for warranty, don't shop there. By law, in Australia, the manufacturers must provide a minimum of 12 months warranty on items like cameras, white goods, TV's etc. (this is also the case in many other countries). In this case, there should be no problem in taking a faulty item back to the retailer, because the retailer can have it replaced or repaired by the manufacturer. I would suggest you 'vote with your feet' and don't shop at retailers that do not do the leg work for warranty claims.

If, for example, you buy a camera that is advertised to have 51 AF points and not all of them work correctly, you have a faulty camera and can return it for a replacement or repair...
