A quite effective way to get around the problem of poor AF with portraits with the 50 f1.8II is to autofocus roughly, switch to MF, and focus by rocking the body back and forward, using focus-confirm. You might need to rock forward a few mm further than indicated because the system is probably measuring the distance to the eyebrow rather than the eye, which is usually a few mm further away. This technique, which can be learned quite quickly, is useful for other lenses because they all have the eyebrow problem.
