If you just had to take one lens, then I also support the 24-70 to be that one. The next one will be 70-200. Remember, if you are not going on a specialized photo tour, but as a part of a family tour, your opportunity and time of visit for photography will be limited to mostly snapshot types, unless you have worked out something special with your tour operator. The 28-300 is a Jack of All Trades, Master of None lens, and will do great as a snap shot lens. However, as you own the Nikon trifecta/trilogy, is shows that you are a serious photographer. So, I think the 2.8 zooms will be well utilized by you during the trip.
