I think many birders here in the UK (using Canon) will have the Canon 7D/500mm/1.4x combination

It's much harder to get close to birds in Europe than in the US (many US birders have told me this) other than from hides on special reserves so reach is a big factor. It's hard ever to get as close and you want to so even though I love my 1DsII I would never use it with the 500mm for this reason
