I also own the f3.5 and bought it specifically over the 8-16 because I do a lot of indoor and night shooting so needed the wider aperture and ability to take 80A filters to correct for tungsten lighting. But if you only plan on using it for daylight shooting go with the 8-16 which is supposed to be sharper in the corners (my copy is fine from 12-20 but at 10mm the corners never become sharp).
