Having been involved with Nikon for many years an issue that has arisen is that people can not see through their viewfinders and new issues arise.
Nikon lenses since the year dot have focused past Infinity, why in high temperatures the lenses expand and visa verse in cold climates they contract, I learnt this the hard way..
No Nikon have not changed their tolerances, it people are buying lenses that they would never have thought of buying and yes they are very different, camera models are changing faster now than ever in the days of film, the F lasted about 15 years before the F3 was released, yes there maybe issues, but demands on production are much higher..
