S95 vs SX40
I know this is a few months old, but I thought I would give you my 2 cents. I have a SX30, not 40, but I use it all the time for sports video. It takes much better video than my D7000 SLR; by that I mean it focuses faster and the vibration isolation is much better. The other thing I wanted to say is that the SX30 is built like a tank, hopefully the SX40 is as well. I use a wrist strap to hold onto my SX30 instead of a neck strap and I have dropped the SX30 twice on concrete because it has slipped off my hand or gloved hand. Both times on the front lens. Both times the camera was turned off by the way. The camera still functions. Can't ask for more than that. Actually, the outer metal around the lens bend inward and the camera wouldn't work after one of the drops but I squeezed on the area that was bent in and it moved just enough to start working again. It has been working for at least a year since then. Picture wise I am pleased but I don't expect much for a mega-zoom. Having said that, I have taken a nice picture of an eagle on a branch that I couldn't come close too with my SLR because I only have a 200mm max focal length and the SX30 reaches well past that. I like that I can through it in the car and is so convenient. And, if I loose it or break it I won't be too sad. I treat my SLRs much different.
