I have never used a vertical grip before. I have also not used a 1 series camera. In what ways does the vertical grip improve one's photography? In particular, how does it affect travel/family photography? I noticed that 70-80% of my photos have landscape orientation. Perhaps this is because I don't use the vertical grip? I'm wondering if vertical grip is worth the added weight and bulk.

If most of your images are in landscape then you probably won't see much benefit.

Personally I'm the opposite: I shoot a lot in portrait orientation and a grip allows you to tuck the elbow and not only keep the camera more stable but it minimizes shoulder fatigue.

The camera also feels more balanced with larger lenses.
