I am wanting to shoot live bands and I imagine a wide angle lens would be best for this. I also plan on upgrading my camera at some point to something like a D800 or equivelent and it would be great if a lens I get would transfer to the new camera.

Wide angle images can make for hugely dynamic live music shots, but it also depends on the types of venues you'd be shooting in as well, height of the stage, distance, etc.

But the best [ultra] wide angle lens is the Nikon 14-24mm f/2.8. It's huge and expensive, but the image quality is excellent. And since it's full-frame, you're covered if you move to a D800.

Here's my review of that lens, which includes interior architecture photos as well:

That said, my most-used lenses for concert photography are the Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8 and the 70-200mm f/2.8.
