None of the above, most likely. However, imagine a situation where Matsushita fails to produce a competitive sensor for years and the entire m43 project is compromised as a result. They did show a reluctance to invest in research by sticking with the same 12MP sensor with not quite stellar noise and DR for far too long; Sony seems to be the most progressive sensor manufacturer right now, and a logical conclusion is technological superiority for NEX over m43, and for Nikon and Sony over Canon dSLR.

Don't get me wrong - I personally think it's all mostly entertainment for pixel peepers who shoot pictures of their own desk. For real photography, all current sensors seem to be simply excellent, but equipment is sold by hype and megapixels and bloated DR numbers and exaggerated ISO values. I remember when all the Canon users who had a 8MP 20d used to laugh at Olympus who had 5MP E-1 with "high noise", which didn't prevent people taking great pictures with their E-1, but it did prevent Olympus from making serious money. So competitive sensors are important.
