Do .CR2 Files Offer Any Advantages Over .DNG Files?

And why do they update the plug-in? Because Canon/Nikon/Blank changed their raw formats again, requiring Adobe to spend some effort adding the support. You think they should do that for free, forever? ...

They do/did that for free? Since when? Adobe are selling a product. And btw. Canon raw format (CR2) didn't change since 2004.
