Sigma 50mm f/2.8 EX DG for portrait Photography?

Since my Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 is on it's way to NY for repair, I played with my Sigma 50mm. I know that this is a macro lens but would this lens make a good portrait lens too? If so, what would be a good aperture to use (2.8)? Believe it or not, I can't get anyone to pose for me, even my dog! Are these considered good bokeh?

Thanks for looking!

Eugene
