My advice: Don't rush to any conclusion on your capability of getting motion-blur free shots. Keeping 'the calm' here, in the heat of action, is a challenge, yes

The %-age of keepers here, tends to rise substantially by time & training. Lower ISO's will then be possible ! I try to practice an upper ISO-limit at ISO 1250 for action-shots. I think it's important to avoid underexposing at high ISO's in general with the 40D (instead, I go for one third over-exposure, gives much less noise, just test and make up your own opinion here ...).
