Recommendations: Light source for macro flower photography...

For macro flower photographs, I use the outside light from my front window. On a cloudy day it provides nice, even, soft lighting. With the use of a reflector, the results are satisfying. Sometimes, however, I would like to add something more than the just the ambient light...like a ray of sunshine streaming across the petals. Other than going outside, is there a separate light source that emulates this? Would my external flash unit (Nikon SB800) suffice?

Note: I am looking for equipment recommendations such as light sources, light bulb types, etc.
