Barrel distortion or blur units in 18-200 mm lens?

Hi,

I am considering buying the 18-200 lens for the convenience (I know it is a compromise). Nikon 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G IF-ED AF-S DX VR II Nikkor

I see on the review that there is a significant amount of "blur units" described especially when wide open at 24-35 mm - otherwise the lens seems to do ok.

My question is this: Will the in-camera processor (D5100) fix the blur units to enhance the sharpness if I shoot in jpeg mode, or will this defect always adversely affect the images taken under those circumstances?
Does this cause barrel distortion or is that something completely different?

Thanks!
