The principle behind the different lens sizes is simply optical design targets. Building a compact lens, which comes in handy in use, requires solving more difficulties and necessitates other, often, more expensive materials. Building a compact lens with good perfprmance is costly. Building a good performer for a reasonal price will bring a not compact lens but a big one.

Quick example: compair Canon´s EF 100mm/f2.8 IS ( big, huge, exellent and not expensive), and a Leica´s Summicron 90mm/F2.0 (compact, exellent too exept for the price...)
