Obviously, the 85mm is a better complement to the 17-55mm than the 50mm.

The 85mm 1.4D should be perfect for portraits ("the bokeh champion") but I think the Auto Focus won't work on your D50 as this lens has no internal motor.

The 85mm 1.4G and the new 85 mm 1.8G (three times less expensive) should work fine on the D50.

If the 85mm would be to long indoors at some places, you still have your 17-55 which is a great portrait lens, too.
