G1X - Same scene from 3 cameras over 8 years

A little bit of a beach theme to brighten the day....

There's no need to compare the cameras or try to see if one outshines the other. They each did their job admirably. But I was surprised to discover that I had taken the same sort of shot with the same sort of composure and framing with the same polarizer and thought it might be interesting to show them alongside one another.

The area in the pictures is a little bay called The Haven - which is located in the district of Terrigal in New South Wales, Australia. I'm regularly there because it's where my parents live. I took these pictures over a safety railing just a few meters down the road from their house because the trees in their garden would have blocked it. I must say that I envy their lovely view because they get the most glorious sunrises and sunsets, obscured by trees or power-lines.

  • Canon Powershot G1X (with Circular Polarizer) - April 2012

The two shots below have also been edited in Photoshop and note that they were shot years apart on very different weather conditions, different tides and different intensities of sunlight.

  • Canon Powershot Pro1 (with Circular Polarizer) - September 2004

This image is close to the same picture that came out of the camera so the color saturation is lower and a basic auto-Contrast has been applied. The other two images above it and below were more carefully edited in Photoshop (the G1X image was adjusted in Lightroom 4 as well). There would be no problem to re-saturate the color in this image to better match the other two.

  • Canon Powershot G11 (with Circular Polarizer) - March 2010

The tide was highest in this picture from the G11 which has resulted in more intense green colors in the shallow areas of the lagoon. The submerged rocks also add to the contrast and I do remember heavily editing this picture and enhancing it in Photoshop. The only picture to escape the edit process was the one taken with the Pro1.

............................................................................................

The larger version from the G1X is certainly worth a look. The horizon is razor sharp and you can see the coal ships lined up across the horizon waiting for their turn to load up. There's quite a bit more color depth in the larger version as well, and it's still a fraction of the size of the full sized original ... this one is just 1536 pixels wide.

  • G1X - LARGER IMAGE : 1536 pixels wide (same as the first image at the top)
