AUTO Mode question

I often visit a safari park to take pictures of animals. There is a small train

driving through the park and I attempt to shoot pictures from the moving train.( My camera: SX40 HS )
The speed of the train is 2 to 3 miles/hour.
As I am a beginner I always choose AUTO mode.
My problem is that sometimes I get clear, sharp pictures and sometimes they are
not sharp and out of focus which means I obviously did something wrong.
Unfortunately I have to act fast in order to catch the subject.

Two questions I want to ask:

1) Is it imperative that the green frame appears on the display prior to
taking the picture ?
Sometimes I get a green frame, sometimes a blue or white frame
and sometimes no frame at all.

2) What happens if a picture is taken when there is no green frame ?
Could that cause out of focus pictures ?

3) Focus: is it imperative that the subject is within the green frame ?
What if it is outside of the frame ?

Thank you
