Is new necessarily better?

Well my beloved S90 has packed up (probably something to do with me dropping on the lens whilst it was out but we'll skip that bit) and with a new baby on the way I've started looking for a replacement.

Trouble is, having just upgraded my DSLR (I won't mention what to on this particular forum!) funds are limited and just don't stretch to even a replacement S90 off the bay and I know from past experience its really difficult to find a point and shoot that I'm happy with (closest I've come after the S90 is my wife's Samsung ST70).

As it happens we've got the niece with us this weekend so I thought I'd dig through my archives and embarrass her and found some photo's of her first birthday taken on my old Ixus 500 (no not the HS, the original Ixus 500) and I'll tell you what, it may only be 5mp and be 10 years old but it takes lovely photos.

I started going through some other photos taken with it. The colours are rich and vibrant, the noise handling is sympathetic, images are sharp with plenty of detail. Really opened my eyes to what these older cameras could do.

OK, the image size is quite small and the rear screen is, well, just about fit for purpose but given what I want the P&S for and what I'll be viewing and printing them on I think I may have just found my S90 replacement, in the attic covered in dust!

Some images follow (and I should point out these were taken well before I was using Photo Shop so are straight out of the camera):
