The overriding reason I wouldn't buy a D3200 is it doesn't have auto exposure bracketing. That's a must on any camera I own. I'd love to have a D3200 sitting in my car for everyday shooting, but I'd rather have a D5000 in there because it auto brackets.

The next guy will never auto exposure bracket in his life and will not know what I'm talking about.

I don't care that the D3200 doesn't have two dials or all the direct access buttons nor top LCD like the D90 or D7000. Neither do my D5000 or D5100 but they work just fine for my purposes.

But, you see, I only came to these conclusions after starting with a D40 and working my way "up". Experience will tell you what it is you "need".
