I don't yet have the E-M5 (probably not available before mid/end of May here), but I suppose that if the EC is not affected to the subdial, as is the default, then you need to press the up arrow first and then you will be able to use one of the wheel in order to adjust the EC (now only you can tell which dial will be enabled for EC adjustment).

the way the camera has been set, it seems that they have assumed we would all like the new settings i.e.:

dials for aperture / shutter control + EV compensation.
arrows controlled by thumb to control focus point.
2 camera buttons to be set as needed (one default to tone control)
a 3rd button on the camera to be further set.

If we wanted to change anything the changes will be akin to those found on the EP3, hence the EV compensation for the upward arrow button.
