28-300 VRII as vacation lens for FX

The Nikon 28-300 VRII is affordable and quite sharp (especially if you stop it down 1 or 2 stops). It's main problem is distortion (easily corrected in Lightroom or something similar) and some vignetting wide open at 28mm. Easily corrected and not much of an issue if you stop it down.

Aside from that its pretty nice for an all-in-one lens. Focusing is quick, and if you have used the 18-200VR for DX cameras the range is identical to that, except this outperforms the 18-200 all around.

You could always toss a 50mm 1.8 or 1.4 in your pocket for very low light or night shooting but with D800 high ISO performance it may not be necessary.

I'll probably get called out for recommending a budget lens, but it's pretty darn good for what it does.
