EX1 - IS and DUAL IS mode oddities

In another thread there is a bit of discussion about what DUAL IS does or doesn't do.

I decided to do a quick test and do a couple of shots in my dark laundry, one in P mode locked to ISO800, and one in DUAL IS mode which also used ISO800.

When I looked at the two shots they were both similairly stabilized, bearing out what others had said that DUAL IS does nothing accept to lift the upper limit on ISO.

But the strange thing is that the DUAL IS shot was darker, and used f1.8, 1/10sec, ISO800, but in exactly the same light the P mode used f1.8, 1/6sec, ISO800.

So what is this about, why don't the two modes take the same exposure?

The other thing is that the IS hand symbol appeared in both modes under the centre focus square, and this normally doesn't happen. Could this mean that IS is only invoked in extremely slow shutter speeds, and explain why we think that IS on the EX1 is poor. I now suspect that unless this hand appears the IS is not in use.

I then did a few more tests and found that the IS hand only appears under 1/20sec and slower, so if you take a shot at 1/30sec and you move a bit it will most likely be blurred. I think this may explain why we think the IS doesn't work very well. Both my hand held shots above taken at 1/6sec and 1/10sec with the hand symbol were stabilized perfectly.

I'm open to ideas here, there seems to be a lot of uncharted water about the entire stabilization system.
