Distance info is used in TTL-BL flash mode. I guess without D the camera reverts to something more like plain TTL. "Dandelion" metering chips that can be fitted to pre-AF lenses to regain auto metering fool the camera into thinking that the distance is measured while in fact there is no distance gauge, so TTL-BL may go berserk. This does not occur with AF non-D lenses because the camera knows the distance is not known.
It maybe also used in the 3D tracking AF mode.
