Wide open lenses for the SX40 is what you have. Wide o[en simply means largest aperture. To get the shallow depth of field you want in a highly portable camera with a small sensor, you need a very fast lens and to make it useful, it needs to be fast at all focal lengths. Suggest you check out the Panasonic LX5 (24-90 mm f/2-3.2) and the Olympus XZ-1 (28-112 mm f/1.8-2.5). Both will nicely blur the background when used wide open; and both would make a nice light and compact companion to the SX40HS for travel. Plus, it gives you a backup, just in case.
