AF vs AF-D what are the practical differences?

I also have not seen an optical formula difference but often Nikon changed something on the D versions. I know they often changed the type of multi coatings. My friend's older 35-70 f/2.8 AF has a distinctly different color to the coatings from my AFD as does the older and newer 80-200 f/2.8 AF/D. I don't know that the differences are worth considering, but if I had two to choose from and they were the same, I'd get the D.
