Q: 5DIII, AF-ON button and auto focus with no metering

I have no experience with 5D and 1D series. Only some experience with EOS60D.

I'm learning to use 5DIII and I'm confused with the Custom control functions setup related to AF and metering. Checking the custom control menu I can see that default setting for AF-ON button is AF & metering. Despite that when I tested and push AF-ON it seems my camera performs AF function without metering. I tested with different metering modes. Why "metering" word is included if it doesn't work at all? Do they mean metering of light needed for phase detection only? I suppose metering is AE calculation based on light intensity. Furthermore in the custom control setup there is no dedicated AF function alone without metering!? Why AF alone option is missing? I'm confused.

In my manual it's described from page 321-324.

My goal is to adjust AF-ON button to do AF only and I would like to do the metering with shutter button (half press).

Thank you for your time & help.
