The camera will still have a lot of trouble giving you the focus confirm because it is still trying to determine focus from the same image. It will have the slight advantage of not over-shooting the focus point as you will be able to move the focus ring slower than the AF but still not practical for moving subjects.

You can replace the viewfinder focus screen with a type more suited to manual focus. You do lose the markings of the AF points though so will only see them when they light up. The standard precision matt screen would be better for slow lenses (Ef-A) or you could use the Ef-D which also has a grid for alignment.
