In defense of the 12-50mm…

I am not sure why this ‘kit lens’ gets so much flak. It is actually quite good.

Okay, it is not a 12-60mm Zuiko, or even a 14-54mm Zuiko, both of which I have previously owned, but I think it is unfair to expect the 12-50mm to be at that quality. Those Zuiko 4/3 lenses are much thicker, bigger and weight at least twice as much.

I wonder how many people realize the size of this lens? Okay, it is long, but not that far off in size to the 14-42mm kit lens when extended, although in an internal zoom body form.

Have a look…

Add to this the fact that at wide-end it goes to 12mm and then at the long-end it goes to 50mm with macro mode, and has power-zoom and weather-sealing, I don’t think it is bad at all when purchased as part of the OM-D package (my version of the 12-50mm is slightly sharper and has less CA than my 14-42mm II).

I am now planning to give away my 14-42mm II to a co-worker.
