Nikon have the 80-200 f/2.8 to compete with the Canon 70-200 f/4

Nikon have the 80-200 f/2.8 which is mid way between the 70-200 f4 and f4 IS. It doesn't have IS, but the image quality is pretty good and it goes down to f/2.8 so its Apple's and Oranges

On the 24-70, the Canon has been lagging behind the Nikon 24-70 for ages which is why they are upgrading. The 24-70 is one of the sharpest lenses in the Nikon range and doesn't really need an upgrade. In short, Canon is playing catch up rather than trying to lead the pack.

What makes a difference is Canon's legendary 70-200 F4L IS, which has no real corespondent in Nikon's line-up. It's ~ half the weight of the 2.8, so much more convenient to carry around. This is my biggest concern here: a high grade walkaround lens. Are there any other lenses worth considering here?
