Canon 1Dc: Vertical Grip ? What for ?

In Canon's own words:

"London, UK, 12 April, 2012 – Canon today announces the introduction of the new EOS-1D C, a digital single-lens reflex (SLR) camera targeting the motion picture, television and high-resolution production industries. Delivering outstanding video quality, advanced low light performance and film-like dynamic range, the compact and lightweight EOS-1D C supports in-camera 4K (4,096 x 2,160) video recording with 4:2:2 colour sampling, offering greater creative freedom for video professionals."

... my questions :

  • why a vertical grip? To produce vertical 4K films, to display in very narrow theaters in crowded Tokyo?

  • why keep the prism ? motion picture, television and production industries and high-speed autofocus ?

Video in 5Dmk2 took the world by surprise, even Canon admitted they were surprised by the success of the video feature on it. It was kludgy, but people found ways around it.

Fast forward 3 years: 1Dc designed specifically for video, not a lucky-stumble. No excuse for subpar ergonomics on such a camera.
