Well, I can respect not wanting to have a larger camera, but since it adds nothing to the depth while increasing the barrel width with just a few millimeters, to me the convenience of having all the protection of a lens cap without ever actually handling one and being able to just pull the camera up from a pocket and shoot, immediately returning it back vastly outweighs a size increase I consider marginal. I can't stand lens cap handling so I always suggest a split-on-exctract cap whenever I see other people who feel similarly. They have served me well on several compacts that didn't have an in-lens cap.

The issue with them is protection from direct impacts from objects and dust. Still something not favorable if you just throw your camera in a bag and move. Also makes the camera less compact, with an even longer portion sticking out.

The lens cap will drive her nuts.

I agree with the rest of what you've written, in particular that a camera like EX1 isn't for anybody who isn't willing to actively work it. But I have to say that I find the lens cap issues with "better" compacts like the EX1 to be solved already - just buy a three-part automatic split-on-lens extract cap for a few bucks at your local friendly photo dealer and never worry about handling caps ever again. I wouldn't even consider a compact if it weren't for those brilliant little things.
