How well can you remove Haze?

Living in a sunny country, a very frequent problem with landscape images is bluish haze that sometimes is too 'thick' to the point it looks like fog.

Here is a good example of a picture taken last summer, during a holiday to northern Greece. It is a monastery, one of many on the Athos peninsula, viewed from a boat, a few hundred yards from the shore. The views of the mountains and monasteries were indeed breathtaking but the mid-day haze of the really hot day was a real problem.

I'd love to see how you can tackle the problem, remove the haze and restore the detail and beauty of the scene back (or close) to what one could see with a naked eye.

Thanks for your time
