Upgrade for bird photography

I have a 450D and use a 100-400 canon lens for bird and wildlife shots. My problem is I can't seem to crop enough to enlarge my photos like I want. Is is strictly technique or would a camera upgrade help? I'm very new at this and am sure that I need to improve. I thought of a portable blind too. I've discussed upgrading before but it's not just sharpness that I'm having a problem with, it's enlarging too. I like to print 8x10s of my shots. Also what about using a monopod ? I've been trying to hand hold because a tripod just doesn't work for me.

Any additional info. for me?
