For "running and gunning" outdoors, a DSLR is a terrible choice in the same way a 35mm film movie camera is a terrible choice (weight and size difference aside).

The very small depth of field given by the large sensor size leads its self to planned and thought out shots. Focusing is hard without an appropriate camera rig and follow-focus. You really will want an external microphone. Since the lenses are so massive, the IS system does make noise.

If you were doing stop motion animation, a DSLR would be invaluable. But its not a camcorder substitute, its really the (cheap) modern incarnation of a large film movie camera.

I can recommend the Canon Vixia line of camcorders. Small size, great performance. If you want something better, the Canon XF100 is good, and Sony makes some great mid-level video cameras.
