The VRI version is very popular for good reason, even when testing a little darker in the corners it is likely better in the corners than anything else in your kit. Softness is not so bad, vignetting is higher in the corners on FX but easily compensated for in post.

I have a lot of good lenses from 24 1.4, 17-55 2.8, Sigma 50 1.4, Nikkor 85 1.4, and lots more but the go-to-lens with the most shots and keepers is by far the 70-200vrI. It is the best portrait lens I have, the 85 famous for portrait performance is not better, nor does it focus as fast. Try it out yourself and ignore the hyper critical reviews on the web. How it works for you is all that is important.
