how does the optical preview work?

The function you can map to the button on the front of the NX10

I read it's supposed to give you a depth of field preview, but I don't see that happening. When I press the button, I hear a "da da" sound as I see the aperture blades move, but on the screen, nothing seems to happen. The screen just lags, refreshes and shows a slightly brighter scene (all in about 1 second), then slowly darkens back to the original portrayal. Sometimes it doesn't even show a brighter scene- the screen just lags momentarily. Same for the EVF.

This is with the 30mm lens; I think it has always been this way (I got the camera a year or so ago), but I'm not 100% sure. I fiddled around with it when I first had it, but it didn't seem to do anything and I found using the button for manual white balance was far more useful anyway, so I just forgot about it, assuming if I just read up on how to use it later it would work properly.
