The gamma is actually very simple, defined as
Output = A * Input^gamma

The derivative, when A = 1 and gamma is 2.2, is 2.2 * x^1.2, which at point 1 (being the steepest point) gives the slope of 2.2. So my estimation was that much off, but at point 0.95 it's already 2.07, so assuming the slope as 2 is still rather convenient. Strictly you would need 9.14 linear bits for a "perfect" sRGB JPG quality.

(2^8 * 2.2 = 2^x, solve x)
