The higher bit depths help handle posterization effects on certain images such as solid but slightly variable in intensity skies. Other then that situation, I've not seen a benifit to anything higher then 8-bits and even with the poster issue, it can bel cleaned in post processing. Still, being a GIMP guy, I do wish the GIMP could handle higher bit depths. The advantage to higher bit depths, to me, is more on the processing side. I sometimes take an 8-bit image, convert to 16 bit (PS; yes, I do sometimes open it; lol) and do a lot of heavy processing before converting back to 8-bit. Again, the higher bit depth helps eliminate poster effects especially when processing. The internet is an 8-bit environment though, so, the final step is the downconversion and hopefully, everything is right to reduce posterization to a point where it doesn't get noticed.
