On your test, you did not remove the eye cup and cover the eye piece with black tape after closing the eye piece cover.

and why should anyone use a black tape at all?

To make sure no light enters through the eye piece.

Following the above instructions may damage your camera because you have removed your lens that communicates with your camera and the paths that the electronics is expecting to fond will not be present, so strange results can be expected from the electronics, including circuit failure, due to stress and overheating, caused by partially completed circuits.

Do you understand what FUD means? Don't spread unnecessary fears. Fully manual lenses work perfectly fine with these cameras. They have absolutely no electronics or communication linkages. The cameras are capable of handling that. If you are too scared because you don't understand this fact, try with a lens with a lens cap attached

The camera detects a manual lens when turned on; it is called electronics.

Perhaps an introductory course in electronics would give you a better perspective about a Camera with multiple specialized microprocessors, and thousands of electronic switches on printed circuit boards outside of the microprocessor, which the 5D III have.

There is a science to correctly testing things, and it takes lots of practice to become a proficient tester, so my suggestion is to leave testing to a proficient tester.

This is just "using the camera". It's a robust piece of kit. Don't worry. If you have a better suggestion, please do share. Don't be over-paranoid and spread FUD. Everyone understands a little bit of science. This is no rocket science. Don't make it more complex than what it is

When the camera is switched on, power flows through many circuits in anticipation of the camera being properly used. Taking a picture as suggested cause circuits to be charged without a release path. The Camera shutter should only activated when a picture is to be taken.

And just what is normal about taking pictures with the lens cap on?

I am out to take the perfect picture, if it exits!
