Canon T1i vs GF2 - Size Weight Comparison
Apr 7, 2012
I love canon dslr, I used to travel with these in my bag everywhere
Canon 30d
Canon 430ex flash
8 AA batteries + 2 lithium backup for 30d
Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 for portraits
Canon 17-85mm IS for wide angle
Canon 50mm f/1.8 for lowlight
Canon 70-200 f/4 for telephoto
You can't never have too many backup batteries or too many lens
At last carrying these gears has taken a toil on me. I downgraded my 30 to a Rebel XTi to lighten the weight The XTi is later upgrade to XSi, then to a T1i. I sold off
Canon 35 F2, 50 F1.8, 85 F1.8
and replaced them with a single Tamron 17-50 (non-VC). I upgrade the Tamron to a Sigma 18-50 f/2.8 Macro, then to my lovely
Canon 17-55 f/2.8 IS USM
. I also consolidated my Telephoto lens collection from
Canon 55-250 + Canon 70-200 F4 (nonIS) + Canon 100mm F2 + Canon 200mm F2.8
to just a single
Canon 70-200 F4 IS
. Now I have everything cover with just 2 lens: Canon 17-55 + 70-200 F4 IS. This also enable me to dump my
camera bag
and use a
Black Rapid
RS-4 sling strap instead.
Black Rapid sling strap, unfortunately, worsen the
ZOOM CREEP
on my expensive $1100 Canon 17-55 f/2.8 which doesn't have a single
zoom-lock
to prevent zoom-creep. Fearing for the longevity of my Canon 17-55, which is heavy and bulky at times, I bought a Tamron 17-50 F2.8 VC (with
zoom lock
) for traveling with Black Rapid RS-4 strap.
While I'm
content
with my Canon T1i + Tamron 17-50 F2.8 VC setup, I'm not 100% satisfied. Due to the size and weight of DSLR, I find it necessary to bring along a
point/shoot
to cover times when using DSLR isn't desirable . So I broke down and just bought myself one of those
"trendy" mirrorless
camera
GF2 is not the smallest or the lightest m4/3 you can buy, but it is CHEAP and comes with a HOT-SHOE and is compatible with my lovely Canon 430ex flash.

I don't think mirrorless (today) is going to replace my Canon T1i dslr yet. But my Canon
SD4000 point shoot
with a tiny 1/2.7" CMOS sensor is toast. I'll leave my canon dslr gear at home for serious shooting, and travel with a m4/3 mirrorless when I want lightweight.
