High ISO noise postprocessing

First off, high ISO noise is with us to stay -- some of what you're seeing is granularity of the light: photon shot noise. You can't expect sensors to beat physics. Fortunately, postprocessing can.

I use free software, mostly gimp. GREYCstoration/G'MIC offer great control over denoising, with a confusing array of sliders. There's a learning curve, but it is worth it. Simpler options with gimp include wavelet denoise and wavelet decompose (which allows editing of individual frequency components as layers).
