I think the 50mm AF-S f/1.8 is an ideal first SLR lens. MUCH cheaper than 35mm f/1.4 and excellent optical quality, and small and light to pack/carry. I also prefer 50mm to 35mm for my only lens (if I had to choose one), but that's just personal preference. I think using a 50mm for a while will help you know if you lean more towards the wide or telephoto range. I started with the 50mm f/1.4 and ended up with the 24-70mm f/2.8 as my main go-to lens, although I still have and occasionally use the 50mm.
