When do you need more then 6400?

more ISO means the camera goes to more places ;-)

its a virtuous circle actually: once pictures in a given light level start looking quite good, one is tempted to lug the camera to places with even lower light levels.

and while I mentioned churches, the fact is, as you so usefully remind us, that in most places in the world people have very little light once the sun has set (even our rich countries were largely that way until Edison invented the light bulb and the power network had spread enough to feed the bulbs).
