Here is a possible solution to the issue of backing up photos,and needing lots of memory:

I have an Epson multimedia storage device - it comes in 40Gb and 60Gb sizes. The advantage is that you can display your photos on this device. If/when this becomes nearly full, I transfer many of the photos to a flash drive. There is no loss of data in this transfer. A couple of these drives at 32Gb each would approximate the capacity of the larger Epson.

I also take several 32Gb memory cards, and keep the cards once they are nearly full, so that I have 2 copies of all photos until I return home. That's a lot of storage, with 2 copies each, totalling roughly 60Gb of memory.
