Question regarding D800 Dynamic Range

Hello all,

I am genuinely curious as to how DXO can set the DR of the camera to 14.4 stops. I thought that each stop was a doubling - so if you have a 14bit output then the theoretical maximum is going to be 14 stops right? I can see that you could compress more dynamic range into this space but you would need to lose information somewhere so you would still only actually record 14 stops even if the brightest and darkest were more than 14 stops apart as you look with your eye or external meter.

Please help me find where I am going wrong!

Thanks in advance for the help.
